Science & R&D
Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is now considered the leading cause of dry eye. Our research focuses on how warmth and lubrication can work together to support a healthy tear film.
A thin layer
that does a big job.
The tear film protects the eye and keeps vision clear. Dry eye happens when there is not enough moisture on the eye — because of too few tears, or tears of poor quality.
Lipid (oil) layer
Made by the meibomian glands in the eyelids. It keeps tears from evaporating too quickly.
Aqueous (water) layer
Keeps the surface of the eye moist and comfortable.
Mucin layer
Helps tears spread evenly and stick to the eye.
Meibomian gland
dysfunction.
When the oils inside the meibomian glands thicken, less oil reaches the tear film and tears evaporate faster. Eyes can feel dry, gritty, tired or irritated — and, surprisingly, sometimes watery.
Warmth applied to the closed eyelids is a common way to help soften these oils. Our work explores how to make that routine simple and pair it with nighttime lubrication.

Warm + protect.
One therapeutic synergy.
Our research pairs controlled eyelid warmth with a preservative-free ointment, so each step makes the next one work better.
- 01
Warm
A self-warming mask delivers steady, gentle warmth to the eyelids for about 15 minutes.
- 02
Release
Warmth softens the natural oils inside the meibomian glands so they can flow again.
- 03
Protect
The nighttime ointment supports the tear film while you sleep, sealing in moisture.
Next: eyelid hygiene.
Clean eyelids are part of a complete eyelid care routine. Two new EYELIVIO® products are coming in January 2027.
